San Diego, CA - September 10, 2008 - The Women's Peacepower Foundation has honored Vivian Glyck, Executive Director of the Just Like My Child Foundation, with the 2008 Women of Peace Award. The Women of Peace Award "recognizes women in the United States and other countries that:
As the 2008 award recipient, Vivian will accept, on behalf of the Just Like My Child Foundation, a small monetary award, a certificate, an award necklace, and attendance at a workshop on non-profit development in Florida. The Just Like My Child Foundation will also receive technical assistance to help its project grow, in order continue its life-saving work. Vivian was chosen for the award based on her cutting-edge approach to improving the lives of women and children in rural Uganda. She founded the Just Like My Child Foundation in 2006 after visiting rural Uganda and experiencing an overwhelming drive to make a difference for women and children, even if just one village at a time. Since the inception of the Just Like My Child Foundation, Vivian and her team have secured funding for a girl's private school and scholarship program, allowing girls to stay in school longer, avoiding violence and youth pregnancy. She has also worked with such organizations as the Clinton Foundation to secure HIV services for, raised funding for a generator for the Bishop Asili Health Centre in Luwero The installation of the generator has assured that women no longer will have to give birth by candlelight many medications will no longer spoil during power failures. Other accomplishments attributed to the vision and motivation of Vivian include the purchase of an ambulance, the implantation of modern HIV medical equipment, and a program to provide health care to ailing mothers in an effort to keep families intact. When honored with this award, Vivian noted that, "The accomplishments of the Just Like My Child Foundation have far exceeded my expectations and dreams, but I know there is a lot more to be done to make an impact on an entire geographical area that suffers greatly from lack of medical equipment, doctors, nurses, and women leaders. We have a lot of work to do, but we are sure that with continued support from organizations such as the women's Peacepower Foundation, we will achieve our vision." |
